As regular readers of my blog have no doubt noticed, I am constantly trying new techniques and working to develop new skills. My chosen medium of polymer clay is one of almost infinite possibility, and I’ve so far only experimented with a tiny fraction of what is available.
Yesterday, while trying clay carving for the first time (photos below), I had a moment or two of panic: it wasn’t working out like I’d expected. Nonetheless, I kept going, and the finished product is quite beautiful. Had I quit in the middle, when the results seemed less than stellar, I would never have seen the beauty of the finished product.
The experience reminded me of this quip by motivational speaker Tom Krause:
“If you only do what you know you can do, you never do very much.” – Tom Krause
Some days, simply trying is half of the battle. More often than not, when I put in the effort, I’m pleasantly surprised by the results.
